PSMC National Conference Highlights the “Unseen” Dimensions of Medical Education

Pramukhswami Medical College (PSMC), Bhaikaka University, hosted the National Conference on Medical Education 2026 on 30 September and 1 October, bringing together around 160 medical educators and faculty from across India to explore how medical education can foster compassion, empathy, ethical practice and professional identity alongside clinical competence.
Organised by the Department of Medical Education and NMC Nodal Centre, PSMC, the conference centred on the theme “Seeing the Unseen: Integrating Medical Humanities and Modulating Hidden Curriculum in Competency-Based Medical Education.” Discussions examined how institutional culture, professional relationships and everyday clinical experiences shape the values and attitudes of future doctors beyond the formal curriculum.

The two-day programme featured four hands-on pre-conference workshops on reflection, narrative medicine, literature and art, and professional identity formation. Keynote addresses by Dr Avinash Supe (KEM Hospital, Mumbai), Dr Sajith Kumar (Government Medical College, Kottayam), and Dr Tejinder Singh (NAMS Emeritus Professor) were complemented by a panel discussion, six oral presentations and 24 poster presentations.

Emphasising the conference’s central message, Dr Praveen R. Singh, Organising Secretary and Convenor, NMC Nodal Centre, PSMC, said, “Competent doctors treat diseases; compassionate doctors heal people. As educators, our responsibility is to nurture both.” Dr Swapnil Agarwal, Dean, PSMC and Organising Chairperson, highlighted medical humanities as “not an add-on, but a pedagogic bridge that connects competence with wisdom.”

With 95% of respondents reporting that the conference met their expectations, participants particularly valued narrative medicine and reflective writing as practical approaches to bring back to their institutions.

The conference concluded with a roadmap for integrating medical humanities and addressing the hidden curriculum in Indian medical colleges through sustainable approaches to teaching, learning and assessment.

The conference was held under the patronage of Dr Gauri Trivedi, President, Bhaikaka University, with Dr Abhay Dharmsi, Provost and Dr Jyoti Tiwari, Registrar, Bhaikaka University.
