KMPIP Observes World Stroke Day with Community Engagement and Awareness Initiatives

The K. M. Patel Institute of Physiotherapy (KMPIP), a constituent institute of Bhaikaka University, observed World Stroke Day with a series of impactful activities that not only highlighted the importance of early intervention but also showcased the institute’s proactive role in community engagement and health promotion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. R. Harihara Prakash, Principal of KMPIP, emphasized the significance of spreading awareness about stroke symptoms and the need for timely medical attention. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between awareness and action. Through physiotherapy-led interventions, education, and preventive strategies, we aim to empower the community to take charge of their brain health,” he stated.

Faculty members and student volunteers played a pivotal role in organizing the events, ensuring active participation from the public, residents, and caregivers. The program included a blend of educational drives, interactive sessions, and hands-on training focused on health education and neurorehabilitation.

As part of the community outreach, KMPIP students conducted an awareness drive at key crossroads in Karamsad and Vallabh Vidyanagar. They engaged with commuters by applying safety reminder stickers on vehicles and educating the public about road safety rules, including adherence to speed limits and the importance of wearing helmets. The initiative also emphasized preventing road traffic accidents (RTA) — a significant cause of traumatic brain injuries and strokes.

A total of 40 individuals were screened for stroke risk factors using the Stroke Riskometer App. Participants were educated about early warning signs and modifiable risk factors for stroke and were provided with simple, lifestyle-based recommendations to reduce their risk.

At the Advanced Neuro Physiotherapy and Training (ANPT) Unit, 20 stroke survivors and their caregivers received hands-on training in essential rehabilitation techniques such as proper patient positioning, bed mobility, transfer skills, and fall-prevention strategies. The session aimed to enhance confidence and promote safer, more effective home-based care.

As part of the academic activities, a webinar titled “Tickling of Cortex” was delivered by Dr. Narkeesh Arumugam, Professor, Department of Physiotherapy, Punjabi University, Patiala. He shared expert insights on the application of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and its effectiveness in stroke management and neuroplasticity, while also addressing queries from students and residents.

Additionally, engaging cognitive games were organized for residents to stimulate memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities. Participants showed great enthusiasm, making it a lively and interactive learning experience.
