First-year MBBS students of PSMC, Bhaikaka University adopted families at Kasor village, Anand District

First-year MBBS students of the Pramukhswami Medical College (PSMC), Bhaikaka University (BU), Karamsad have adopted families at Kasor Village of Anand District for the period of four years.

As a part of the new National Medical Commission (NMC) MBBS training curriculum, each medical student has to adopt three to five families to monitor their health conditions regularly and advise them accordingly. This family adoption program will ensure enhanced healthcare services in rural areas. Consequently, the adopted families shall become self-sufficient in primary health care. The outcomes achieved by these medical students will bring a massive change in the health care of rural area residents.

“Medical education regulator, NMC has included this program under the Community Medicine Department of every medical college to ensure enhanced healthcare services in rural areas. The idea behind the program is also to provide MBBS students with on-ground hands-on experience from the beginning. This will help to enhance the quality of medical education ”, said Dr. Dinesh Bhanderi (Head of the Department of Community Medicine).

Dr. Himanshu Pandya (Dean, PSMC) pointed out: “We already have a Rural Stay Programme for medical graduates. Under this program, they have to stay at the village for one week and understand the health-related issues of rural communities. Now with the inclusion of a new family adoption program in the MBBS training, we can further ensure the primary health and well-being of people in villages. The students will take the responsibilities of health care of adopted families ”.

Faculty members will guide the MBBS students looking after the adopted families in rural areas. The students will be aware of the health issues of the rural community, provide health education to them and conduct health camps and if needed refer the patient to a tertiary care hospital(Shree Krishna Hospital, a teaching hospital of BU).

PSMC started the Family Adoption Programme on 15th November 2022 under NSS. On this occasion Shri Atul Patel (President- BU), Shri Jagrut Bhatt ( Hon Secretary ), Dr.Utpala Kharod (Provost -BU)Dr. Himanshu Pandya (Dean-PSMC), Dr. Jitesh Desai (Medical Superintendent – SKH), and Dr. Dinesh Bhanderi (Head – Community Medicine) were present.
