Dr. Regi George, Managing Trustee, Tribal Health Initiative, Tamilnadu delivers the 17th Memorial Lecture.

Charutar Arogya Mandal paid rich tributes to its Founder Chairman Dr. H . M. Patel on his death anniversary Wednesday 30th November 2022. Shri Atul Patel, Chairman CAM, Shri Jagrut Bhatt, Hon Secretary, CAM, Dr. Utpala Kharod, Provost, Bhaikaka University, Dr. Harish Desai, Registrar, Dr. Jitesh Desai, Medical Superintendent, SKH, Head of constituent Institutions, Doctors, nurses, faculties, students and management staff paid floral tribute at his samadhi

On this occasion, Dr. Regi George, Managing Trustee, Tribal Health Initiative, Tamilnadu delivered the 17th H .M Patel Memorial Lecture on "Keeping the margins at the centre - A life Journey in tribal health” at Bhikhabhai Auditorium.

He said that there is 8 percent tribal in our population, but tribal health is still one of the most neglected. In this era of robotic surgery, the death ratio between mother and child is very high. In 1993 we started a makeshift labor room, a place for doing some surgery at Sittilingi Valley in Dharmapuri Dist of Tamil Nadu. The valley had a 95% tribal population and was almost cut off from civilization. Our main challenges were the health parameters. Infant mortality was 147/1000 and many mothers died in childbirth.

He stressed that as we come from a Gandhian background, our aim was to try and establish a Gram Swaraj in health. For that, we trained 40 – 50 aged tribal women in the basics of health and hygiene, nutrition, antenatal care, and medicines and care to treat primary illness. They disseminated their knowledge to the villagers. Due to this the infant mortality was 20/1000, no mothers were dying in childbirth and child malnutrition came down by 80% by 2008.

He emphasized that for the newer generation of doctors, we devised two programs: the Rural Sensitisation program and Travel Fellowship.

Shri Atul Patel Said that Pramuskhswami Medical College of Bhaikaka University has been putting a lot of effort into sensitizing undergraduate students to rural health for many years This was the first Medical college in Gujarat to give one-week village stay posting twice during their MBBS study. Students were also given small research projects under the name “Problem Solving for better health”. Moreover, during an internship, they are sent to NGOs working for community health located in different districts for widening their perspectives.
