Cancerous tumour removed from 17 -year-old girl’s kidney

Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre of Shree Krishna Hospital, Karamsad, a teaching hospital of Bhaikaka University gave a new lease of life to a 17-year-old girl by removing a cancerous tumour from one of her kidneys.

Ms Disha Ishwarbhai Prajapati, a native of Anand District was experiencing unbearable pain in her abdomen, following which she was admitted to the hospital. The patient had a lump in the abdomen. On evaluation, it was found that she had a large well-defined, non-tender mass occupying the whole of her left abdomen and also extending beyond the midline, the Oncologist Dr Raghunandan said.

Ultrasonography and CECT scan revealed that there was a huge tumour arising from the left kidney. It was compressing the adjacent organs and also displacing the surrounding major vessels.

“Noticing complications, we discussed the case in the tumour board of the centre and decided to perform a left radical nephrectomy. During the procedure, we first dissected the tumour from the adjacent organs to ensure that there is no major bleeding” the Oncologist said. “Then the whole tumour along with the left kidney was removed. During the surgery we received support from the Urologist, Dr Nagendra Mishra and the Anesthesia team Dr Birva, Dr Mansi, Dr Usma and Dr Mihir ” he said.

The surgery was conducted free of cost under Ayushman Yojana.
