BU Hosted National Nursing Conference on Trauma and Emergency Care

A two-day National Conference on “Innovations and Interdisciplinary Practices in Trauma and Emergency Care” was organised by the Department of Adult Health Nursing, Institute of Nursing Sciences and Shri G. H. Patel School of Nursing, Bhaikaka University on 11–12 March 2026 at the Auditorium of the Institute of Nursing Sciences. The conference brought together nursing faculty, students, emergency and trauma care professionals, allied health professionals, researchers, and academicians from different institutions to deliberate on recent developments and collaborative practices in trauma and emergency care. 

The conference was organized under the leadership of Organising Chairperson Prof. Shany Thomas, Organising Secretary Ms. Rachana Chauhan, and Joint Organising Secretary Ms. Swizel Rana. The event carried 7 CNE credit hours and served as a valuable academic platform for knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and professional networking.

A pre-conference workshop was conducted at the Skill Lab of Bhaikaka University and the Skill Lab of the Nursing College. The workshop focused on hands-on training in essential life-saving skills. Sessions included Advanced Airway Management conducted by Ms. Priyanka Pandey, PhD Scholar and Assistant Professor, PIN & Centre Coordinator, Pragya: The Advanced Skills and Simulation Centre, Parul University.

The Advanced Skills and Simulation Centre. Basic Cardiac Life Support training was delivered by Dr. Hemlata Kamat, Professor and Head of Emergency Medicine and Skill Lab at Bhaikaka University along with Ms. Swizel Rana, Assistant Professor at INS–GHPSN, Bhaikaka University. Neonatal Resuscitation training was facilitated by Ms. Mansi Hamirana, Simulation Educator–West at Delta Health Care. A session on Active Management of the Third Stage of Labour was conducted by Ms. Vandana Shrimali, Associate Professor at INS–GHPSN, Bhaikaka University.

During the conference, Mr. I. A. Kadiwala, Vice-President of the Gujarat Nursing Council, congratulated the organising team for successfully conducting the national conference on trauma and emergency care. He emphasised that Gujarat nursing professionals should take pride in such academic initiatives and encouraged nurses to pursue higher education including PhD and doctoral degrees. He also motivated nurses to appear for competitive examinations such as GPSC and UPSC and to participate on international platforms to bring recognition to the nursing profession.

Dr. Abhay Dharmasi, Provost, Bhaikaka University highlighted the importance of the theme “Golden Hour in Polytrauma” and stated that such conferences provide a valuable platform for networking with professionals from different institutions while enhancing clinical knowledge and collaboration. The inaugural function was graced by Dr. Jyoti Tiwari, Registrar of Bhaikaka University, and Prof. Shailesh Panchal, Vice Principal of the Institute of Nursing Sciences.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Jaya Kuruvilla, Director Academics at P. D. Hinduja College of Nursing, Mumbai, who emphasised the evolving role of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in strengthening trauma and emergency care systems.

Dr. Suresh K. Sharma, Principal of the College of Nursing at AIIMS Jodhpur, along with Mr. Ravi Barot, Associate Professor at Kumud and Bhupesh Institute of Nursing, Ganpat University, spoke on global and national trends in trauma and emergency care and highlighted the need for updated knowledge, research, and collaborative practices in improving patient outcomes.

A session on the “Golden Hour in Polytrauma: Challenges and Opportunities in Emergency Care” was delivered by Dr. Keyur Shah, Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Pramukhswami Medical College, Bhaikaka University, and Mr. Sunil Joshi, Chief Nursing Officer at Shree Krishna Hospital, Bhaikaka University. They emphasised the importance of rapid assessment, coordinated teamwork, and timely interventions in saving lives during critical trauma situations.

Dr. Harsh Patel, Consultant Emergency Physician at Shree Krishna Hospital, Bhaikaka University, also shared valuable insights on emergency management and the importance of preparedness in trauma care settings.

Kiran Domaniya, Principal of T & TV Institute of Nursing, Surat, delivered a session on evidence-based practice in disaster and mass casualty triage, highlighting strategies to improve response efficiency during large-scale emergencies.

Dr. Vijayalakshmi Poreddi from NIMHANS, Bengaluru, along with Dr. Deepak Krishnamurthy, Associate Professor at Manikaka Topawala Institute of Nursing, CHARUSAT University, discussed post-traumatic stress management in emergency patients and the importance of psychological care alongside physical treatment.

Dr. Nitin Raithatha, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Pramukhswami Medical College, Bhaikaka University, and Ms. Priyanka Macwan, Assistant Professor at CVM Nursing College, CVM University, spoke on reducing maternal mortality through evidence-based interventions in obstetric emergencies.

The conference concluded with an insightful session by Dr. Jyoti Sarin, Principal of Maharishi Markandeshwar College of Nursing, New Delhi, who spoke on paediatric emergency care under the theme “Saving Little Lives.” She emphasised the importance of prompt recognition and specialised care in paediatric emergencies to improve survival and recovery outcomes.

The conference successfully highlighted innovative approaches, interdisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based practices in trauma and emergency care, strengthening the knowledge and clinical competence of nursing professionals and healthcare providers.
